Crop to the subject for more relevant colours

If your image has a large plain background (white, grey, sky), the extractor will dedicate cluster centroids to those background colours rather than the subject's colours. Cropping the image to focus on the subject before uploading gives you a palette that reflects the subject's actual colour story. A product photo cropped to just the product will yield far more useful brand colours than the full studio shot with white backdrop.

Use 12 colours for photography analysis

Five or eight colours can miss important secondary hues in complex photographs. If you are analysing a landscape photo, a fashion image, or any image with rich colour variation, use 12 colours to capture the full colour story — the dominant sky blue, the accent greens of foliage, the warm earth tones in the foreground, and the subtle purple in the shadows. Then curate down to your preferred palette size from there.

Turn the palette into a Tailwind config

Copy the extracted hex codes and build a custom Tailwind CSS palette. Add them to your tailwind.config.js under theme.extend.colors. Name them semantically (primary, secondary, accent) rather than by hue (blue, green, red) for a more maintainable system. The CSS variables export is the fastest starting point — rename the variables to match your naming convention.

Match UI elements to photography automatically

For image-heavy sites, use the extractor to generate per-image palettes and apply them to UI elements that appear alongside each image — card backgrounds, text overlays, button colours, borders. This technique, sometimes called "dynamic theming", creates a cohesive visual experience where the UI feels like it belongs with each specific image rather than being a generic shell.

Extract brand colours from a logo

Upload your company logo (PNG with transparent background works best) and extract the palette to get exact brand colour HEX codes — useful when you have a logo file but no brand guidelines document. The tool filters out near-transparent pixels, so transparent logo backgrounds do not pollute the extracted palette with white or grey.
