What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used by designers, developers, and typesetters to fill layouts before real content is available. The classic version begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." and is derived from a scrambled excerpt of Cicero's philosophical work De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. The text has been used as filler since at least the 1500s, when an unknown typesetter scrambled the Latin to create a type specimen book.
The reason it has persisted for five centuries is practical: the mix of short and long words, and varying sentence lengths, gives a realistic sense of how real text will flow in a layout. Meaningful readable text in the wrong language or domain can distract reviewers from evaluating the design itself — they start reading and responding to content rather than evaluating layout.
Generating by paragraphs
Paragraph mode is the default and most commonly used. Each paragraph contains 4–8 sentences of varying length, giving a realistic visual rhythm. Use this when you need to fill a content area, article body, or multi-section layout. The first paragraph optionally begins with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." opener for immediate recognisability.
Generating by sentences
Sentence mode generates a specified number of complete sentences as a single block of text. This is useful for filling shorter content areas like product descriptions, testimonials, tooltip text, or notification messages where you need a specific number of sentences rather than full paragraphs.
Generating by words
Word mode gives you a specific word count — useful for content areas with strict word limits, social media preview testing, or any situation where you are testing a specific character count rather than a visual layout.
Generating by bytes
Byte mode is less commonly needed but invaluable when testing API response sizes, data storage limits, or network payload sizes. Specify the approximate number of bytes and the generator produces text that fills that byte count.
Classic Latin vs English vs Gibberish
Classic Latin lorem ipsum is the universal standard — any designer or developer immediately recognises it as placeholder text. Random English words are occasionally preferred for testing with clients who might be confused by Latin, or for testing English-language spell checkers and content analysis tools. Gibberish provides phonetically plausible but meaningless text for testing character rendering and font support with unusual letter combinations.
Wrapping in paragraph tags
The HTML paragraph tag option wraps each paragraph in <p></p> tags, making the output ready to paste directly into an HTML file, CMS, or template. Without this option, paragraphs are separated by blank lines, suitable for Markdown or plain text editors.
