For general web content and blogs: 60–70 (Standard). For consumer product copy: 70–80 (Fairly Easy). For children's content: 80–90 (Easy). For academic writing: 30–50 (Difficult) is acceptable. Adjust based on your audience.
Each formula weights different factors slightly differently. Flesch-Kincaid focuses on syllables and sentence length. Gunning Fog focuses on complex word percentage. SMOG is most sensitive to polysyllabic words. The variation is normal — they represent different aspects of readability.
SMOG requires at least 30 sentences for its formula to be fully accurate. The other scores are reliable with 10+ sentences. Very short texts (under 100 words) will produce unreliable scores.
No. The right score depends on your audience. A scientific paper for researchers should score higher than a children's book. Readability scores measure complexity, not quality. Simple writing is not always better — it should be matched to the audience.
The formulas are mathematical approximations based on measurable proxies (sentence length, syllable count). They do not measure vocabulary difficulty, conceptual complexity, logical structure, or coherence. A grammatically correct sentence with common short words can still be confusing.
Most major English-language newspapers target a Gunning Fog score of 10–12, corresponding roughly to a 10th–12th grade reading level. Tabloids typically score 8–10. Academic journals typically score 15–18.
The readability formulas were developed for English and are most accurate for English text. They can be used as rough approximations for other Germanic languages, but the syllable counting and word complexity heuristics are calibrated for English.
