The 20% tip shortcut — no calculator needed
To calculate 20% mentally: find 10% (move the decimal one place left) and double it. Bill is $74.50: 10% = $7.45, 20% = $14.90. For 15%: find 10%, then add half of that. $74.50: 10% = $7.45, half = $3.73, total tip = $11.18. These mental math shortcuts mean you can calculate a tip faster than opening an app — but the splitter is still useful for group splits.
Include the tip in the amount you Venmo
When one person pays the bill and everyone else Venmos or transfers their share, make sure the shared amount includes their portion of the tip. The most common bill-splitting mistake is one person paying the whole bill (including tip) and everyone else paying only their share of the food total — leaving the payer effectively covering the entire tip.
For large groups, collect cash first
For groups of 8 or more, collecting cash from everyone before the bill arrives is much easier than managing multiple small transfers after. Use the splitter to calculate each person's amount in advance (based on your best estimate of the menu prices), collect, and then adjust the final few dollars once the bill arrives.
Gratuity vs tip — check your bill
Many restaurants automatically add a gratuity (service charge) for groups of 6+ people — typically 18–20% added to the bill before you see it. Always check the bill for a line item that says "gratuity", "service charge", or "auto-gratuity" before adding your own tip on top. Tipping 20% on a bill that already includes 18% gratuity results in a 38% effective tip.
