Right-align numeric columns for scannability
Numbers in tables are significantly easier to compare when right-aligned — the units position is always in the same column, making magnitude differences immediately visible. Right-align all columns containing prices, counts, percentages, scores, and other numeric values. Left-align text columns. Centre-align status indicators, icons, and yes/no fields. Set alignment using the arrow button in each header cell before exporting.
Keep header labels short but descriptive
Table headers should be concise enough to read at a glance but specific enough to describe exactly what the column contains. "Price (USD)" is better than "Price" (clarifies currency) and better than "Price in United States Dollars" (too long for a table header). For Markdown tables, shorter headers also mean shorter separator rows, making the Markdown source more readable.
Markdown table limitations to know
Markdown pipe tables do not support: merged cells (no colspan or rowspan), multiple header rows, table captions, column groups, or complex formatting within cells beyond inline Markdown. For simple tabular data they are excellent. For complex tables (comparison matrices, financial tables with subtotals), HTML output is more appropriate because it supports the full range of table features.
Add a caption to HTML tables for accessibility
The HTML output from the generator does not include a caption element by default. For accessibility and SEO, add a caption manually: place <caption>Your table description</caption> as the first child of the table element. Screen readers announce the caption before reading the table, giving users context for what the data represents.
Use the Load Sample button to understand the format
Click "Load sample" to populate the grid with example data (names, roles, cities). This shows you exactly how the grid, column headers, and alignment controls work before you enter your own data. It also lets you verify that the output format looks correct for your use case before starting data entry.
